LJH WASTE SORTING SYSTEM FOR SID KNOWLES WASTE

In July 2002 a new recycling facility was commissioned for Sid Knowles Waste at Lee Mill, Plymouth to handle over 25,000 tonnes of commercial waste per year. A subsidiary of Cornwall Environmental Services, Sid Knowles Waste selected the LJH Group following inspections of similar installations.

The LJH Group designed, manufactured and installed the integrated waste sorting system. Comprising waste feed hopper, trommel screen, blower and a picking belt, it will process waste from the construction, retail and commercial market sectors.

At the hand-over ceremony Cllr. Pam Lyne, Chairman of Sid Knowles Waste, commented “Waste Disposal is becoming a crucial issue, recycling is certainly the way forward and we’re extremely proud to be leading the way with this new, state-of-the- art facility.” “Additionally, this has provided local benefits of job creation and further reduced the need for landfill.”

The LJH Integrated Waste Sorting System removes the fines materials from the waste stream as it passes through the trommel screen, with the blower carrying light materials, paper and plastics, etc., via a duct to a 40m³ container. The remaining material transfers to a picking belt where sorting of three products, wood, metal and glass is completed by hand selection. The hand selected products are dropped through collection bins to 40m³ containers positioned below the picking belt with the remaining heavies, i.e. hard-core, being rejected to a fourth bay eliminating the necessity for handling.

The complete LJH Integrated Waste Sorting System was installed with electrical connection, controls and commissioning within twelve working days.
